Orleton School Level 3 video
Following our single use plastic audit as part of Clever Schools Plastic award level 2, which found we throw away A LOT of plastic whiteboard pens, our eco-reps have been trialing whiteboard crayons (see link below) in some of the classes and they love them; they’re easy to use, don’t stain uniform, easy to rub off & much better for the environment. They haven’t even sharpened them yet, but each class has thrown away approx. 13 whiteboard pens!

Each crayon is the equivalent cost to 5 whiteboard pens and are made from recycled wood.

Following a campaign by our eco reps the school SLT have now agreed to scrap ALL whiteboard pens for the following academic year and all classes will be using these crayons so NO MORE PLASTIC WHITEBOARD PENS. What a great result for our eco-reps, our school and our environment! CTLH4994[1].MOV

As you can see, we are encouraging our families to reduce plastic use by:
-No single use plastic bottles in school. Instead, we are encouraging reusable metal or hard plastic bottles only. This includes at our upcoming School Games events and sports days when we will no longer provide the children with bought water bottles as in previous years.
-No single use plastic in packed lunches. Instead, we are advising parents/carers to use reusable containers or tin foil
-No single use plastic bags for forest school and swimming kits. Instead, we are asking parents and carers to use reusable shopping bags to keep muddy boots and wet costumes contained.
As you can see from the pictures submitted, we no longer gave pupils bringing in cling film, plastic sandwich bags or single-use water bottles.

We are still working with our on-site externally run catering company to request they stop providing single-use yogurt pots and instead serve yogurt in bowls. We will notify you as soon as we have reached an agreement with the catering company.
Orleton School Level 2 Action Plan

We now intend to act on our findings from the audit and have created an Action Plan using the Clever Plastic’s resource. The eco council have been tasked with campaigning to get our next stock order of whiteboard pens and glue sticks to be reusable and/or ecofriendly.

The council are also going to persuade the kitchen team to bulk buy yogurt and serve it in bowls rather than individual yogurt pots.

    Orleton School Level 2 Audit

We conducted an audit of the school using the Plastic Clever school’s resources. We found our biggest single-use plastic wastage was whiteboard pens, glue sticks and yogurt pots.

      Orleton School Level 1 pledge

We spent time researching how and why plastic was invented. We looked into the manufacturing process of single use plastics such as a bottle. We also looked at and discussed how plastic is having a negative impact on our oceans.

As a result of our research, we were able to produce a very meaningful school pledge.

Orleton School Level 1 litter pick

We had a very productive litter pick around our local school community. We made a real impact on our local environment especially the local wood and got some steps in at the same time!

        Orleton School Level 1 assembly

Thanks, Nathan, for such an informative and engaging assembly. The whole school were thrilled to find out how they can help our oceans and be part of the Plastic Clever School Award.
