Plastic Clever Wall Display

We designed and put up our plastic clever wall display today. All the kids in the Eco Council had a say in what to include. We will add to this as we continue on our journey.

    Action Plan

Our plastic audit showed us that plastic food packaging, pens/felt tips/markers, and laminating were the main plastic waste culprits.

So we created this action plan to try to tackle the problem.

We looked for an alternative to plastic whiteboard markers and felt tips, but there aren’t any. There is also no way to recycle them, so there’s not much we can do, sadly, other than encourage the careful and limited use of them and ask the Head to consider crayons over felt tips.

We are also going to get the message out to parents and kids to consider plastic-free foods for pack-ups and to introduce plastic recycling bins in the dinner hall.

Finally, we are going to put signs up by the laminators in the school to ask the user to consider if they REALLY need to laminate or if plain paper or card, or mounting the paper, or using waterproof paper would be better.

Not plastic, but we are also going to introduce paper recycling bins by the photocopiers!

      Plastic Audit

Completing a plastic audit of our school was a bit of an eye-opener! We expected a lot of stationery items, but to find 1,000s of plastic pens, whiteboard markers, felt tips, and plastic wallets was still a shock!

We were pleased to see that the staff room was relatively plastic-free, with the use of ceramic mugs, reusable water bottles and proper cutlery.

The dinner hall is trickier, as 40% of kids have pack-ups and so we have little control over what kids bring in from home. However, maybe we could encourage recycling of pack up waste.

We are going to create an Action Plan next to tackle the worst offenders. The difficulty will be trying to find solutions that don’t cost the school a lot more and don’t take up valuable space.

      Watch this space!

      School Assembly

We held our whole school assembly today to share the video presentation and to tell the school why we are doing Plastic Clever Schools and what we’ve done so far. The kids each presented a part and it was a success!

Why we joined Plastic Clever Schools

Our school Eco Council share why they joined the council and why we’re doing Plastic Clever Schools.

      Litter Pick

We did a litter pick around our school field and playground today, picking up two buckets full of various litter types. The kids were super-keen to clear the whole field, and we discussed the different litter types there and what was recyclable.

We also talked about how the litter could harm wildlife and about microplastics seeping into the ground and waterways.

We then emptied the buckets on the playground and separated the litter so that we could place anything recyclable into the relevant bins.
