Students worked to complete a mind map which considered all the ideas we have ready to act on reducing single use plastics in our school.

Students shared their ideas using the mindmaps as part of the conference, with 4 other schools. From their feedback, students will now meet again back at school to put in proposals with SLT.

CHCC School Plastic Audit

Students and staff met to discuss the audit and what was needed to ensure we were looking at the right solutions to reduce plastics in our school.

We knew that single use plastic bottles were one of our main issues to tackle but were surprised that classroom resources such as pens and glue sticks were an issue as well. We hadn’t considered this at all before embarking on our journey.

    Action Plan

Students prepared a detailed action plan for CHCC, to ensure all areas are covered and impact can be made.

Why we want to be a Plastic Clever School

Each student wrote their own reasons for why they wanted to become part of the Plastic Clever Schools. Ultimately, students have realised that saving the marine life is all of our responsibilities. As part of the conference attendance, students also shared their reasons to other schools.

    School Plastic Audit

Having completed the audit, we found that plastic water bottles are our biggest concern at Crown Hills, followed by plastic folders and plastic sandwich bags.

      Litter Pick

For the last two years we have been completing half-termly Litter Picking events both in school and within the community.

The bottle lids that we collect as part of this are then washed and recycled into key rings, bird houses and insect feeders as part of the DT curriculum and ECO club activities. An recent article has just been published, written by one of our DT teachers who teaches using recycled plastics is attached as a photo, to show how this idea came about.

We have won a Lord-Lieutenant Business Community Award as a result of the work we have completed, one of the only schools in Leicestershire to have accomplished this.

      Raise Awareness

We attended the Plastic Clever Schools Conference 21 April 2023.

We listened to the launch assembly, engaged in Q&A, learnt new information and are now far more aware of the challenges of plastics in our world. For example, we didn’t realise that the symbols on plastics have difference codes and that some are not recyclable, even though they look like they are. Some of the facts and figures were shocking. We must try to address these concerns.
