Spreading Actions in the Community: The Crusares Celebrate!

The students of grades B and C celebrated the completion of their environmental activities as part of the Plastic Clever Schools program by sharing their results with parents, fellow students, and the wider community. We sang a song about our love for nature using sign language, promoting the idea of inclusion. Together, we made a promise to continue our efforts next year with new and enriched ideas. All united for a cleaner, plastic-free sea.

Our efforts are starting to yield results in our school.

We launched the campaign with great success, and the children throughout the entire school showed a strong willingness to embrace change. They asked thoughtful questions to learn more and were excited to take part in our big celebration — a joyful event dedicated to a sea free of plastic.

Our campaign against plastic use is starting

At our school, we launched a campaign with our 2nd and 3rd grade students to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic use and to encourage the replacement of single-use plastics with reusable items.

As part of this initiative, the children created handmade posters that were displayed throughout the school to spread the message. The whole school community was invited to join a special celebration, where students and parents came together to share songs and informative messages about protecting the environment.

What made the event even more meaningful was that all songs and presentations were also performed in sign language, ensuring inclusivity and helping spread our message of love and respect for nature even further.

The Crusaders are organizing their activities

As part of this program, we recently created a poster that outlines our planned activities in a more playful and engaging way.
The poster acts as a creative roadmap of our future actions. It includes a series of interactive and educational activities that aim to raise awareness among our peers and the local community about the dangers of plastic waste in the sea. Some of the initiatives we are planning include beach clean-ups, informative presentations at school, creating upcycled art from plastic waste, and starting a plastic-free campaign in our school.

The Crusaders Take Action and Recycle

The second and third grade students organized their activities and did their best to carry out the planned program in the best possible way. With teamwork, enthusiasm, and creativity, they brought their ideas to life and made the day truly special for everyone involved.

The Crusaders Take Action and Recycle

The students of the 2nd Primary School of Vasiliko, Greece, known as “The Crusaders,” have taken an inspiring step toward protecting the environment and reducing plastic waste. During the winter months, the students gathered plastic bottles from the local beach—part of their commitment to keeping the sea clean and free of pollution.

After collecting the bottles, the children brought them to the special recycling machine provided by the local municipality. For every 33 plastic bottles, they received a reward of 1 Euro. This small but meaningful incentive was used to purchase a new recycling bin for the school courtyard, further encouraging sustainable practices within the school community.

This initiative not only provided a practical solution for recycling but also taught the students valuable lessons about the importance of reducing waste, taking action, and contributing to a cleaner planet. The Crusaders now have a new recycling bin at school, and they are more motivated than ever to continue their efforts to protect the sea and the environment.

Through their collective action, the students are demonstrating that every small step counts, and that together, we can make a big difference.

    THE CRUSARES DEFEND OUR SEA

As part of our marine protection project, the students of Grades 2 and 3 at the 2nd Primary School of Vasiliko created a special video to express why the sea matters so much to them — and why they are determined to protect it from plastic pollution.

Our school is located just a short distance from the sea, and for the children, the coast is not only a place of play and beauty, but also a part of their everyday lives. Many of their families depend on the sea for their livelihood through fishing, tourism, and related activities.

In the video, filmed in the courtyard of our beautiful school, the children explain in their own words:

    • Why they love the sea — for its animals, its colors, its calmness, and the joy it brings them every day.

    • Why they feel responsible for its protection — because it is theirs, it is near, and it is in danger.

    • How plastic pollution hurts the marine world, and how even small actions can help make a difference.

They repeatedly and passionately express their love for the ocean and their strong desire to see it clean and full of life. They speak not just as students, but as young citizens of a coastal community who are growing up with a deep connection to nature — and a clear understanding of their role in protecting it.

This project, and the video they created, is a reflection of their voice, their commitment, and their belief that children can be powerful defenders of our planet.

“We love the sea,” they say. “No more plastics. The sea belongs to the sea. Not to the plastic.”

We invite you to watch their message and be inspired by their sincerity, creativity, and hope.

    THE CRUSARES GET INFORMED

At the 2nd Primary School of Vasiliko, Greece, students from the 2nd and 3rd grade (ages 7–9) actively participated in an educational project focused on the issue of microplastics and the broader environmental impact of plastic pollution in our oceans.

As part of the project, children were first introduced to the topic through age-appropriate educational activities led by their teachers. The aim was to help them understand key concepts such as the plastic life cycle, how microplastics are formed, and their harmful effects on marine life and ecosystems.

Through discussions, visual materials, and storytelling, the students became aware of the journey of plastics—from production and use to disposal and pollution. This helped build empathy and a sense of responsibility towards protecting the marine environment.

Following this, the children expressed their understanding and creativity in various ways:

    • They designed their own environmental logos, reflecting their thoughts and hopes for a cleaner ocean and a future with less plastic waste.

    • They collaborated to compose a poem, aimed at raising awareness among their peers and the broader community about the dangers of microplastics and the need for immediate action.

    • They engaged in planning collective action, preparing posters and pledges, and getting ready to participate in local environmental initiatives such as beach cleanups and plastic-free school campaigns.

This project not only educated the children on a critical environmental issue but also empowered them to become young advocates for change, using art and words to inspire their community.

We are proud of our students’ enthusiasm, creativity, and growing sense of environmental stewardship. Their voices matter—and we are committed to continuing this journey toward a more sustainable and plastic-free future.
