Plastic Audit

Plastic Audit to identify single-use plastics used in school.

    Celebration Video

The children had great fun writing their scripts and performing their celebration video.

The children’s next ideas to continue our Plastic Clever Schools Journey are:

    – To make sure that the kitchen staff are being plastic clever when making the children’s lunches.

    – To support parents and children to make plastic clever packed lunches.

    Letter to Crisp Companies

The children wrote letters to several crisp companies to ask them about their plans for more sustainable packaging. They have received two responses so far and have shared this information with the rest of their school and parents using our school Twitter account.

    Reusable Water Bottles

All classes at Holy Cross and all Saints have reusable water bottles which are brought in to school each day. Some have now made the choice to use metal water bottles instead of plastic.

Taking Action – Recycling milk bottles

At our school, we are recycling our milk bottles each day. Classes are encouraged to make sure that their milk bottles are ready to recycle (tab removed and empty) and to pop them in their classes recycling bin. The bins are then collected at the end of the day by our Eco monitors and taken to the recycling bins.

Next school year, our aim is to have a more sustainable way of providing milk to pupils (either decanting milk or cartons).

How to make a difference – activists

The children learnt all about Greta Thunberg and the work she is doing to raise awareness of climate change. They wrote letters to Greta to say thank you and explain how they are trying to help her.

Making a change – Letter to the Department for Education

Before breaking up for Christmas, Year 2 wrote letters to the Secretary of Education regarding the teaching of the environment and plastic pollution. They wanted to know what the DfE was going to do about their target and why teaching about caring for the environment is not in their curriculum.

We took ideas from each of the children’s letters, wrote one letter and sent it to the DfE. We are still awaiting a response.

          Investigating Plastic Pollution

Year 2 investigated plastic and its pollution and wrote non-chronological reports all about plastic, took part in a plastic debate and wrote in role as a plastic bag polluting the ocean.

            Further Investigation

We have done lots of investigating to learn all about plastic pollution, including:

            • Looking at the journey of plastic and how it can end up in our oceans
            • How garbage patches are created and the impact that they have on wildlife
            • What we can do to reduce our plastic waste

Ms Richardson shared what she found and read at the Eden Project with the class all about plastic pollution.

The children learn all about the adventures and journey of a plastic bottle from drilling for crude oil to plastic bottles being thrown away and polluting our waterways.

              Action Plan

As a class, we completed our Plastic Schools action plan, identifying our main problem plastics and discussed what we could do to make a change.
