Reusable milk bottle

Having identified milk cartons, straws (and the little plastic wrappers that they are contained in) as a problem plastic for us, we contacted Cool Milk to find a solution. We now order larger cartons of milk and have monitors that go around school each day, filling plastic cups or reusable milk bottles. Unlike the the small milk cartons, the larger plastic milk jugs get recycled or used for art project (e.g. year 3 & 4 woolly mammoths!)

    Letter to the council

We wanted to reduce the amount of yoghurt pots that were being used each week (over 350) so we contacted the council and told them the problem and asked for their help. They came to the school and met with the KAP Green team and showed us some larger yoghurt pots that the school kitchen could start using. We even got to taste them and have a vote. A week later they were being used. We still have plastic pots but they are larger and there are fewer of them. They can still be recycled.

    Action against yoghurt pots

After identifying yoghurt pots as a problem plastic in our school audit, we wrote to our council to see if they could help us to reduce the amount that are used by the kitchen and breakfast club.

We arranged a meeting to trial different yoghurt pots are are hoping to replace the smaller pots with larger ones in the near future. We are aiming to recycle the larger yoghurt pots but also re-purpose them for use in school.

    Reusable milk bottles

We have replaced the carton with straws in plastic wrappers with reusable bottles and cups. The children bring in their bottle each day and it is filled by monitors. Milk is now delivered to school in larger milk plastic containers which get recycled. We are looking into possibly getting the milk delivered in glass if the cost isn’t too great.

      Replacement cups for water fountain

We didn’t like the fact that single use plastic cups were being used at our water fountain so we have replaced them with durable plastic cups that can be washed in the dishwasher and used again and again and again!

        KAP Green team Action plan

The KAP Green team did a survey to see how much single use plastic we use in school. Over a week, they counted up amounts of different plastic used in the school dining hall and staff room and identified the key problem plastics. We discovered that yoghurt pots are huge problem in our school (as well as a few other common plastics such as crisp packets and food packaging). We discussed our plan of action to tackle the problem plastics and not long after completing the action plan, began work talking to staff and writing to people. This is working progress but change is already starting to happen!

Our Single Use Plastic Audit for our School

We spent a week analysing the single use plastic that is brought in to school by children and staff at lunchtime. We created a checklist of items which we ticked off and counted up each day before then submitting them to the Kids Against Plastic Audit spreadsheet. We weren’t surprised to see milk appear at the top but we were surprised by the amount of yoghurt pots that our school gets through! This is something that we are now hoping to tackle!

        Book inspired story writing

After reading ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ as part of our Book Week KS1 created a story map and wrote their own stories.

          Book inspired learning

As part of World Book day and Book Week at school Key Stage 1 read ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ and made posters to raise awareness of plastic pollution.
