Heath’s Campaigns

As a school, we’ve looked at ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle.

Some of the eco councillors created posters to encourage the use of reusable water bottles in school (see photo for an example). We have also created posters that encourage recycling, not littering, turning off electrics, walking to school and saving water.

The KS2 children helped to create a ‘Plastic in the Oceans’ display, which highlights the danger of plastic pollution to marine life (see photo). Some year groups also learned about the impact litter and plastic have on the environment in their PSHE lessons.

Over the year, we have sent out ‘Eco Tips and Challenges’ in our school newsletters. In September, our ‘Eco Tip’ will be a reminder to bring reusable bottles into school.

Heath’s Plastic Clever Journey

This video highlights the successes we’ve had at Heath Primary School this year and our plans moving forward.

Plastic Heath have tackled!

Heath have worked incredibly hard to eliminate/reduce our plastic this year.

We have:

  • reduced single-use plastic in the kitchen
  • encouraged reusable water bottles
  • recycled crisp packets
  • made our rubbish into art
  • been on litter picks
    • we then used the litter we found to make boats for a recycled boat regatta (Woodbridge ReFLOAT Regatta)
  • switched to biodegradable glitter
  • reduced the number of glue sticks used per class

We will continue to look for ways to reduce our plastic use, and already have some plans for next academic year!

    Heath’s Action Plan

With the Eco Council, we completed our action plan. We wanted to ensure the targets were SMART – specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. This makes sure that the action plan is achievable. Our Eco Council already have experience of writing action plans, which helped them immensely with writing this one. Together, identified some problem plastics in the school, but also some things we wanted to continue to do to ensure we are ‘plastic clever’.

We are concerned we may not be able to reduce the plastic from the reception’s free milk, but we plan to speak to our supplier to see if they have plastic alternatives.

We’ve already worked really hard to reduce our plastic (banning plastic cutlery, cups and glitter!) as part of our Eco Schools work. Our efforts to reduce our plastic helped us to gain ‘Distinction’ from the Eco Schools’ Green Flag Award scheme – which we’re very proud of.

    Heath’s Audit

Some of our Eco Councillors conducted the survey. For some items, they had to estimate how many the school use daily (e.g. soap bottles). We were pleased to find that we don’t use many single-use plastic items in the kitchen, thanks to our Eco Schools work this year. Now that we have completed the audit, we have identified where we can make improvements as a school. The individual milk cartons used in reception are our biggest issue, but this is difficult for us to change. We will investigate! Our second most used single-use plastic in school is glue sticks. We are looking at how we can reduce the usage.

    Our Assembly

Our Deputy Headteacher delivered an assembly to the children. During the assembly, he asked the children to consider why the ocean is so important and the impact it has on the world’s citizens. The children enjoyed answering the true or false questions and were amazed by some of the facts! At the end of the assembly, the children were engaged and keen to make a difference. They’ve been told to consider what we can do to help our world and become ‘plastic clever’.

Heath Primary’s Why We’re Plastic Clever

This video explains why we think it’s important to be plastic clever.

    Litter Pick

We hosted a litter pick for the pupils and local community. It was organised by our Eco Council. It was lead by Rubbish Walk (a local social enterprise).  We collected approximately 4,000 pieces of litter, with most of them being small pieces of plastic. We hosted a litter pick last year and collected over 5,000 pieces of litter. We were pleased to find there was less litter in the local area. On the last litter pick, we found a crisp packet dated 2003. This year, everything was dated 2023, showing that we have cleared the area of old litter.

We logged our litter pick on the KAP map/app and it is named ‘Heath Primary School’.

As part of the event, we also had a Build Your Own Boat workshop. This was led by Rubbish Walks. Children used their litter to make a boat, which they could sail at a local event on the following day if they wished. This encouraged the children to repurpose and reuse plastic.
