Completing a plastic audit of our school was a bit of an eye-opener! We expected a lot of stationery items, but to find 1,000s of plastic pens, whiteboard markers, felt tips, and plastic wallets was still a shock!
We were pleased to see that the staff room was relatively plastic-free, with the use of ceramic mugs, reusable water bottles and proper cutlery.
The dinner hall is trickier, as 40% of kids have pack-ups and so we have little control over what kids bring in from home. However, maybe we could encourage recycling of pack up waste.
We are going to create an Action Plan next to tackle the worst offenders. The difficulty will be trying to find solutions that don't cost the school a lot more and don't take up valuable space.
